teaching philosophy

Ms. Varner has extensive experience teaching, accompanying and coaching music with children and adults of all ages. She enjoys finding what compels the student within their own music study, whether it's a style of music or an approach to practicing that they enjoy. Her gentle and patient approach has led to success as a private teacher.

A graduate of the Bachelor of Musical Arts program at Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle, Ms. Varner often performs chamber music and solo works by contemporary composers. Her affinity for the music of Lou Harrison led to her recording one of his works for piano and Gamelan.

As an accompanist and director, she has worked with student ensembles at Cedarwood Waldorf School, Holy Cross School, and Southwest Charter School in Portland. She has maintained a private studio for many years both in the Seattle and Portland metro areas.

favorite musical moments

My favorite experiences as a young piano student were the evenings when my mother would take me to watch solo piano concerts at Portland Piano International. Watching those accomplished pianists perform so beautifully inspired me to become excited about classical music, and that excitement for music has allowed me to find so much joy in my life as a musician. As a teacher, I enjoy helping my students find what might inspire them similarly, because when a student feels love and excitement for music, they will learn with much more ease.
